Lecture 3 Practice: Spontaneity in Biopharmaceutical Processes

Nine short problems in different formats, of the kinds you may meet in the assessment: sorting, true or false, matching, reading a graph, finding a mistake, looking up data, working backwards and multi-step calculations. Attempt them in any order. Each answer is checked as you go, and the working is shown once each step is correct.

Equation sheet (as provided in the assessment)
  • ΔG = ΔH − TΔS;  ΔG < 0: spontaneous
  • ΔrS° = ΣnS°(products) − ΣmS°(reactants)
  • ΔrH° = ΣnΔfH°(products) − ΣmΔfH°(reactants)
  • Crossover temperature: T = ΔH / ΔS
  • ΔSsurr = −ΔH / T
  • T(K) = T(°C) + 273.15;  1 kJ = 1,000 J
  • n = m / M

About the values

  • Standard data are from the CRC Handbook at 298.15 K and 1 bar. ΔrH° and ΔrS° are assumed not to change with temperature.
  • The values for the antibody, DNA and drug binding are illustrative, as in the lecture.
  • Small rounding differences are accepted, so you do not need to match every decimal place.
